"For fans of Ben Lerner and Sally Rooney...

A set of ultra-contemporary and electrifyingly fresh fictions about a generation on the cusp, enmeshed in Zooms and lockdowns, loneliness and love. Audacious fictions for a generation wondering: What now?" (Provided by publisher)

"The odds of the planet next door hosting intelligent life are--that's not luck. That's a miracle. It means something.

Filled with mystery and wonder, Ethan Chatagnier's Singer Distance is a novel about ambition, loneliness, exploration, and love--about how far we're willing to go to communicate with a distant civilization, and the great lengths we'll travel to connect with each other here on Earth." "Our predictions of the future are a wild fantasy, inextricably linked to our present hopes and fears, biases and ignorance.

In The Skeptics' Guide to the Future, Steven Novella and his co-authors build upon the work of futurists of the past by examining what they got right, what they got wrong, and how they came to those conclusions. By exploring the pitfalls of each era, they give their own speculations about the distant future, transformed by unbelievable technology ranging from genetic manipulation to artificial intelligence and quantum computing". Read books, explore the city, win prizes!

The Summer Reading Adventure runs from 1 December 2022 — 31 January 2023, and this year we are inviting intrepid explorers of word and page of all ages to join us — children, teens, and adults!

We also have a reading goal that we’d love to reach together. This year, we’re hoping that Wellingtonians will collectively be able to read and log 20,000 books over the summer. The eternal respect and admiration of all bookish Wellingtonians awaits the lucky soul who reads the 20,001st book!

Book club kete - Available at Te Awe, Kilbirnie, Karori and Tawa.

Looking to start a book club in 2023? Can't get enough copies of the book? Check out our Book Club Kete!

Kete is the te reo Māori word for a basket or a kit. Our Book Club Kete hold books to enjoy and share with others at book clubs — have a read below to find out more!

Each kete consists of:

  • 10 copies of a popular title, numbered 1-10 on the cover
  • A tag attached to the bag handle with author and title information, and a brief synopsis of the book
  • A tally sheet for the book group leader or facilitator — so you can record which numbered title (1-10) goes to whom

Want to catch up on the most talked about books of 2022? Our librarians have put together some helpful lists!

We’ve selected titles from across the spectrum: from mysteries to science fiction, award-winners to best sellers and all points in between — books from our own shores and novels from around the world. This is very much our own selection and whilst we have included some of the year’s best-sellers and award-winning titles, we have also included novels that are very much our own choice. This list is definitely not intended to be exhaustive or completist, and we apologise in advance if we missed out any of your favourites!

In Brazil, many ring in the new year at the beach. One tradition is to wear white and jump seven waves at the stroke of midnight.
